The Brit's "Me" Interview

Expat mum has interviewed me with 5 questions, so are you sitting comfortably?!....

1. How long have you been in Brazil, and what's your favourite thing about the country?

I've been in Brazil for ten years now and there is so much that I truly love about this wonderful diverse paradise of a country! But if I have to mention just one favourite thing it would have to be the people...
I have travelled a lot and have seen many countries but never before have I met people like the Brazilians, who find something to smile and laugh about in the worst of situations. As you walk through the streets and on the beaches here you won't see anyone who isn't in a good mood, everyone greets you with a smile and people are always ready to genuinely help you if you need.
It gives a whole light, positive, happy and overall spiritual feel to the country and that is why so many first-time tourists to Brazil fall in love with this amazing country, despite the bad publicity that it sometimes gets.
My advice to first-time travellers to Brazil would be don't listen to the bad press and spend two or three weeks in the country, in particular Rio de Janeiro, I guarantee that you will fall in love!

2. What do you do when you're not blogging?

You mean there's actually life outside blogging?! haha!
Well, professionally I work as an English teacher, which I have been doing here for ten years.
I give lessons to teenagers and adults in English schools as well as businessmen and businesswomen in large companies. Alhough at the moment I am focusing more on private lessons as I can earn more money, choose my hours and ultimately have more time to myself.
For leisure I enjoy travelling, cinema, Dvd's, music, writing, reading and taking care/playing with my dogs.

3. You write great lyrics. Do you have any aspirations in that field? (If not, why not?)

Wow thanks!! I do have aspirations in writing song lyrics and poetry professionally, in fact I have sent many samples off to some publishing houses but no luck as yet... the problem is that many publishing houses don't specialise in this area, but I'm not giving up as I know that I have the talent to write a lot of quality work! One day I hope that I can be discovered - just need to find more addresses to send my work to.

4. What memories do you treasure from England?

Ahhh... how long have you got? haha!
I have so many treasured memories from "good old blighty" of which my main ones are the times I spent with my family, in particular my Mother and Grandmothers as since I have lived in Brazil they have all sadly passed away, so my family is getting smaller and smaller... memories are all that are left when we lose people who are so dear to us so it's extremely important to hold onto every single one.
I have the very strong memory of my Mother on the very last day that I saw her alive as we held onto each other for the longest time at the departure gate at Gatwick Airport when I was coming to live in Brazil. We were both holding each other up as we were crying so much and couldn't control ourselves. It was a terrible day but that image stayed with me and it's really poetic now knowing that it was our "final goodbye"
Other memories are fun times with friends, great conversations filled with the classic British irony and sarcasm which is (as you yourself mentioned Expat mum) so hard to find outside England. I miss having very funny conversations with people who "get" my sick, twisted and very dark sense of humour! If I make a dry joke here I spend almost half an hour trying to explain it all so you kind of leave those things behind in England.... that's sad as I thrived on irony and sarcasm.

5. What are your plans for 2009?

To travel some more. I travel a lot inside Brazil as it is such a vast country and I want to explore more of it, maybe the Amazon Rainforest.
Also I want to really try my hardest to get some of my work published, anything...
As much as I love it I don't want to be an English teacher forever and I know that I have more talents to be able to do more things that I really love.
But more than anything I want to keep on loving, living, laughing and loving life because life is too precious and too short to waste.

Great questions from EPM and equally great answers. I think many of us expats share similar experiences no matter where we have ended up. I too miss the irony and sarcasm, it was my main form of humour and entertainment. Well that and I miss Bacon Butties and Curry!

Thanks Sarah!
It's true, we are all connected in this way no matter where we are in the world!
Haha I would say I miss English tea bags but I can't say that as my Dad sends me a huge stock every month! - the one thing I can never give up, other than that I'm pretty much very flexible! X

That was a great interview! Funny, how you described the people in Brazil is how I describe "your people" here :-)

® ♫ The Brit ♪ ® said...

Hi imbeingheldhostage,
Thanks! Wow, yeah, you know most Brazilians wouldn't know this but they are quite similar to British people.... although here most Brazilians would tell you that all British people are quite cold and not so friendly... not my experience at all! although here they do get most of that info from films, e.t.c.... X

This was a fun read. I love reading blogs from other countries. If you would like to hear from an American, interview me.

Hello there again - it's been a while!

Great interview - and really honest answers. I particularly enjoyed the fact that you miss the British sarcasm and dark humour - I would miss that too. Especially as I write particularly dark humour myself - and on that note, I'm having a bit of an appeal over at Bodge's Bulletin.

Cheers
Gary

As I've been visiting your blog frequentely, I supposed almost all your answers... rsrsrs I would say that it seemed to me a kind of quizz that I got a very good performance!... rsrs
There is only one point of view that I disagree with you: If I were a foreign tourist, I would never come to Brazil, especially to Rio de Janeiro!!! I'm tired and so shamed to see, and to read, so much things about the violence here!... Although the very beautiful places and nature we have, I think it doesn't enough to take risks... What a great pity! Hugs!!!

I have friends that just opened a b&b in Brazil. I hope to visit in the future. It sounds the most lovely of places.

Great interview. I loved your answers. Your emotional goodbye to your mum was something you have fond memories of, eventhough it was tearful, it was something you will always remember.

Brazil does sound like a wonderful country.

Hi Robin,

Loved your answers! X

Hi Gary,
Yeah it's been a while! I've been away from the blog world lately... but I'm creeping back slowly!
I'll have a look at your blog soon!
All the best!

Hi Sergio,
Thanks! haha so I'm not such a mysterious person then! :D
Actually re-reading my answers I can see that I was being very positive when I spoke about Rio, maybe a bit too positive.
I have been living outside Rio for 4 years but I'm returning there in a couple of weeks for a holiday so I guess I will see how it is now...
But I wouldn't tell anyone not to come to Brazil as there is so much here to see and experience... my Dad loves it in Rio! when he has come to visit me he loves dragging me out to all the bars and restaurants and sitting at a kiosk on Copacabana beach drinking beer during the hot Summer daytimes! He'll be visiting me again this year!
Big Hug my friend!

Hi ConverseMomma,
Wow you'll have to let me know wherabouts the B&B is... I hope they do really well!! X

Hi Crystal Jigsaw,
Thanks! I guess with everything that I have written here in my blog there isn't much more that people can know about me... I'm running out of things to write!!
That memory of saying Goodbye to my Mum will stay in my mind and my heart forever! I think I was very lucky to have had the best Goodbye of all as all the rest of my family had the Goodbye with her in so much pain in the hospital... X

Big Hug to everyone!
Donnie

Fantastic interview! Great answers and a great reminder that you never know when goodbye is really truly goodbye and to make the most out of the time you have.

Sarcasm and dry/dark humour are truly fantastic.
