"Grandma's House" - Original Poetry By Me - For My Nan x 1909-1994

Following the steps to Grandma's house,
It's 1994,
I go on in and kiss your cheek,
And gently close the door.

Little trinkets everywhere,
Reminders of your life,
I felt the love within those walls,
Your loss cuts like a knife.

"Do you want a cup of tea, boy?"
You repeated over again,
"You asked me that a minute ago Nan"
"Oh silly me! I'm going insane"

We'd sit and talk so endlessly,
I'd tell you how I'd feel,
You'd listen and give your wise old words,
I remember those days still.

Your memory was unravelling,
You'd forget things more and more,
But still I'd sit and talk to you,
You'd tell stories from the war.

One day we came to see you,
And your mind was oh so far,
Mum said to you "Who am I Mum?"
"I don't know who you are"

This disease is such a wicked one,
It shatters memories like a tile,
But always I'll remember,
Your life, your love, your smile.

what a lovely tribute to your nan, brit. i can tell she meant a lot and you loved her early.

my dad's adoptive mom has alzheimer's. my brother saw her just awhile back. she doesn't really know anybody. what's sad for me is i haven't kept in touch with her for years now. neither has my dad for that matter. it's a long story. maybe i'll share it w you one day in an email if you're interested or even if you aren't LOL jk

Hi ciara!
Thanks! I have a lot of wonderful memories of her and her house!

I would be very interested in hearing the story about your Dad's adoptive Mum!
Alzheimers is terrible... the person that we love just evaporates before our eyes each day. The person still remains alive but their real soul and spirit continues to die each day... it's an awful thing to experience, we were heartbroken to see my Nan, who was always such a strong and fiercely independent woman when in her prime to be taken away by Alzheimers and have to have 24 hour care. x

Dear friend, i've watched "The life before her eyes" and i confess i've got a little confused after the movie. Was that story something that passed through her mind during the gap between the shots and her death? That's what i understood, but i still have doubts... Waiting for your version, Isabella.
